A Monthly Financial Close Checklist for Institutions
Why the close drags
When fees live in one tool, expenses in another, and payroll in a spreadsheet, the close becomes a reconciliation project that never quite finishes.
A connected close
If every movement posts to a ledger, the close is a review.
- Confirm all fee receipts are recorded against assignments.
- Post paying and contra vouchers for the month.
- Run payroll and approve the disbursement.
- Reconcile the bank statement against the book balance.
- Review the trial balance and investigate differences.
Reports that reconcile
A trial balance should balance. A balance sheet should tie to income and expense. If it does not, the difference is a record to find, not a rounding to hide.
Keep the trail
Every voucher, adjustment, and reversal should carry its actor and reason. A clean close is one you can explain months later.
